There is a time during each City Council meeting for questions or comments from the audience. Anyone in the audience has the opportunity to speak at that time. We would recommend, however, that you contact the City Manager prior to the meeting to discuss your issue because he can often provide the information you are seeking or resolve your concern.

1. How high can my fence be?

6ft on side & rear yard, 3 ½ to 4ft on front. (Side yard fences may be over 6' with approved building permits)

2. What size can my accessory building be? How many accessory buildings may I have?

With approved building permits, Single Family zoned properties may have 2 accessory buildings not to exceed 1,000 sq. ft.

3. Do I need a business license?

General business licenses are not required in Dallas. However, a Dallas business license is required for certain types of businesses. Here are some examples of businesses that require licenses from the City:

o home-based businesses
o businesses that operate on streets or sidewalks (examples are an ice cream truck, hot dog stand, etc.)
o several other niche categories require licenses - contact the Community Development Department for details

If your type of business requires a license, applications are available at City Hall.

Anyone planning to open a business in Dallas should check with the Community Development Department on zoning issues. As long as the business owner intends to operate in an appropriate zoning district for the type of business he/she is proposing and the business type is compatible to these zones, no business license is necessary. The City of Dallas has the Central Business District (downtown), Commercial General (uptown / N. Dallas) and Industrial zoning districts.

When planning to open a new business in Dallas keep in mind that making changes to a commercial property may require building permits, change of use permits, Fire Department review, etc. The Community Development Department can assist you with planning property improvements and you are strongly encouraged to contact them before spending a lot of time or money.

Yes. We offer this free service at either station Monday through Friday between 8:00 am and 5:00 pm.

Dallas FireMed has an open enrollment from September 1 through October 31. Please contact City Hall at 503.831.3508 to have an application mailed to you.

4. Does Dallas EMS hire part-time EMTs?

1. How do I get a library card?

Come into the library and fill out an application. You will need to bring picture ID such as your driver's license, and proof of your address. If your picture ID has your current address, that is all you need. If it does not, please bring a current utility bill, voter registration, rental/lease agreement, or printed check that shows your current address.

2. I live outside the Dallas city limits....Can I get a library card?

Yes, in fact you have choices. Adults may have a Free Basic Library Card, which allows check out of 1 item at a time. Children and/or Teens who live outside the city limits are eligible for a free C.A.R.E. Card, which allows checkout of up to 25 Children's or Young Adult items. Fee Cards are also available; $20.00 for 4 months, $30.00 for 6 months, or $60.00 for a year. This fee covers your entire household.

2. How do I know if I need to go to City Hall or the Courthouse?

Generally, if the offense is a traffic or city ordinance violation and occurred within the City limits of Dallas, you need to go to the Municipal Court at City Hall. If the offense is a meidemeanor or felony that occured within the city limits or for any offense that occurred outside the City, go to the Circuit Court at the Polk County Courthouse.

Police Dept

1. How can I obtain a police department patch?

Requests for patches are received weekly, consequently, they are not free. In order to meet the requests of true collectors, patches are available for $25, prepaid. This covers the cost of the patch, the staff time to handle the payment, to track its clearance through the bank, and for shipping.

Requests should be mailed to Dallas Police Department, Attention: Patch Request, 187 SE Court Street, Dallas, Oregon 97338.

Checks should be made to Dallas Police Department with "Patch Request" on the memo line. Once your check clears the bank, a patch will be mailed to the address you provide. Allow four weeks.

2. How can I get a copy of a police report?

In most cases, police reports can be obtained from our Records section within three (3) days of your request. The minimum cost for one copy of a report is $5.00, and must be paid in advance. If a comprehensive search is needed, a $15,00 fee may be added to the cost of the report.

3. If my vehicle was towed, how can I get it back?

You must come to Dallas PD between the hours of 8:00 am - 4:30 pm, Monday - Friday, and present a valid drivers license, proof of ownership and proof of valid insurance. There is a fee of $100.00 that must be paid. After all the requirements are met, you will be given a release that you can take to the towing company.

4. Where do I pay my traffic fine?

All traffic fines can be paid in person at City Hall Finance Department or can be mailed to the address on the back of the citation. Finance Department
